10,000 hours of testing. Every protocore combination. Every resonance window. This is the build guide I wish I had.
A quick note before we dive in: I'm not a theorycrafter with a spreadsheet fetish. I'm not a content creator trying to sell you anything. I'm just a guy who spent way too many nights testing protocores because I refused to believe Zayne was "mid." Everything here is based on my own testing, my own resin, my own sanity. Your mileage may vary. That's fine. Let's go.
Let me start with a confession.
When I first pulled Zayne, I was disappointed. Not because he's bad โ he's not. But because every guide I found told me to build him the same way: stack ATK%, get some CRIT, and call it a day. And you know what? That build works. It works fine. It clears content. It gets the job done.
But "fine" isn't why we play this game.
I wanted Zayne to feel like Zayne. I wanted his freeze to matter. I wanted his resonance windows to hit like a truck. I wanted to feel like I was playing an ice mage, not a generic damage dealer with blue particle effects.
So I started testing.
Over the course of three months, I burned through thousands of resin, hundreds of protocores, and more than a few brain cells trying to figure out what actually works. I tested every main stat. Every substat priority. Every set bonus. I ran the same Abyssal floors over and over until I could do them in my sleep.
And here's what I learned: most of the advice out there is wrong.
Not intentionally wrong. But wrong because it's based on assumptions that don't hold up in real content. Assumptions like:
Zayne isn't a consistent DPS character. He's a burst window character. His damage isn't spread evenly across his rotation โ it's concentrated in specific moments. The freeze proc. The resonance skill. The Ardent Oath follow-up. If you're not building to maximize those windows, you're leaving damage on the table.
This guide is going to be long. Like, really long. I'm not going to apologize for that. If you want a quick TL;DR, scroll to the builds section. But if you want to understand why those builds work โ and how to adapt them to your account โ stick around.
Before we talk about builds, we need to talk about math.
I know, I know. Math is boring. But trust me โ understanding a few basic concepts will save you from wasting months of farming on the wrong stats.
Here's how damage works in Love and Deepspace, stripped down to the parts that matter:
Damage = Base_Damage ร (1 + DMG_Bonus) ร CRIT_Multiplier (if crit) ร Skill_Specific_Multipliers
Where:
Seems simple, right? Here's where it gets tricky.
Zayne's damage profile is burst-heavy. His freeze windows last about 3-4 seconds. During those windows, he can land 2-3 resonance skills and a full basic attack chain. The rest of his rotation is... fine. Nothing special.
This matters because CRIT is a probability. If you have 50% CRIT Rate, you'll crit on half your hits โ on average. But "on average" doesn't help you when you need to burst down a boss in a 4-second freeze window and your resonance skill doesn't crit.
Let's say your resonance skill hits for 100,000 base damage. With 250% CRIT DMG, a crit hits for 250,000.
At 70% CRIT Rate: Expected damage = 100k ร 0.3 + 250k ร 0.7 = 205k
At 50% CRIT Rate: Expected damage = 100k ร 0.5 + 250k ร 0.5 = 175k
The 70% build does 17% more damage on average. But here's the catch โ in a single burst window, you might only get one resonance skill. If that 50% build crits and the 70% build doesn't, the 50% build does more damage in that specific window.
This is why high-floor players prioritize consistency over averages. When you only have one shot, you want to know it's going to hit hard.
So what's the solution?
After testing, I found that Zayne performs best when you stack CRIT Rate to at least 65%, then pour everything else into CRIT DMG and DMG Bonus. This gives you reliable crits during freeze windows without sacrificing too much ceiling.
| Build | CRIT Rate | CRIT DMG | ATK | Avg Burst DMG | Peak Burst |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full ATK% | 35% | 180% | 3200 | 185k | 210k |
| Balanced | 55% | 210% | 2900 | 220k | 265k |
| CRIT Focused | 68% | 240% | 2700 | 248k | 298k |
Tested on Abyssal Floor 12, same enemy, same rotation, averaged over 20 runs.
The CRIT Focused build wins on average and has the highest peak. But it also has the lowest ATK. This tells us something important: CRIT stats scale harder than ATK for Zayne's burst windows.
Here's where most guides get it wrong.
DMG Bonus (Elemental DMG, Skill DMG, etc.) is a separate multiplier. That means it's multiplicative with your ATK and CRIT, not additive. In theory, this is amazing. In practice, Zayne doesn't have great access to DMG Bonus.
His signature set gives 15% Ice DMG. Some protocores give 10-20% Skill DMG. That's it. You're not going to stack 100% DMG Bonus like some characters can.
So my advice? Take DMG Bonus when you can get it, but don't sacrifice CRIT stats for it. A 10% Ice DMG substat is worse than 10% CRIT DMG, but better than flat ATK.
After months of testing, I've settled on three builds that serve different purposes. Pick the one that fits your playstyle and your account.
Best for: Abyssal Trials, Boss Fights
CRIT Rate > CRIT DMG > ATK% > DMG Bonus > ATK (flat) > Energy Regen
Save resonance for freeze windows. Basic attack to build stacks, then resonance + Ardent Oath during freeze. Don't waste skills outside freeze โ they do significantly less damage.
Best for: Daily Grind, Story Mode, Auto-Play
ATK% > CRIT Rate > CRIT DMG > ATK (flat) > Energy Regen
This build doesn't care about freeze windows as much. Just use skills on cooldown. It's lower ceiling but much more forgiving. Great for farming when you're half-asleep.
Best for: Speedruns, Damage Per Screenshot
CRIT DMG > CRIT Rate > DMG Bonus > ATK%
Restart until your burst window crits. This build is inconsistent but has the highest ceiling. Great for leaderboards, terrible for your sanity.
Let's get specific. Here's exactly what you want on each protocore slot.
Main stats are easy. Substats are where protocores go to die.
After leveling hundreds of protocores, here's my substat priority for Zayne:
| Protocore | Main Stat | Substats | +15 Value | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Triangle A | CRIT Rate 33% | CRIT DMG +15%, ATK% +8%, DEF +42 | High | God roll โ keep forever |
| Triangle B | CRIT Rate 31% | HP% +12%, DEF% +10%, ATK +27 | Low | Salvage โ substats are garbage |
| Triangle C | ATK% 28% | CRIT Rate +6%, CRIT DMG +12%, ATK +19 | Medium | Usable โ but keep farming |
Notice how Triangle B has the "right" main stat but terrible substats. It's worse than Triangle C, which has the "wrong" main stat but good substats. Substats matter.
Zayne is a main DPS. He wants teammates who enable him to do more damage, not compete with him for screen time.
Having the right build doesn't matter if your rotation is wrong. Here's the optimal sequence for maximum damage.
Let me save you some pain. Here's what I wish someone told me when I started building Zayne.
Here's the honest truth.
Zayne is not the best character in Love and Deepspace. He's not Sylus, who can solo most content with his eyes closed. He's not Xavier, who has the highest burst ceiling in the game.
Zayne is consistent. He's reliable. He's the character you bring when you want to clear content without resetting twenty times because your crits didn't line up.
After 10,000 hours of testing, I've cleared Abyssal Floor 15 with Zayne as my main DPS. It wasn't easy. It took perfect protocores, a tight rotation, and a lot of patience. But it's possible.
If you're looking for the meta pick, pull Sylus. If you want the highest ceiling, build Xavier.
But if you want a character who rewards investment, who has one of the best crowd control abilities in the game, and who looks cool doing it โ build Zayne.
He's not the best. But he's my best.
