Zayne: The Frozen Heart

10,000 hours of testing. Every protocore combination. Every resonance window. This is the build guide I wish I had.

๐Ÿ“‘ What You'll Find Here

โš ๏ธ

A quick note before we dive in: I'm not a theorycrafter with a spreadsheet fetish. I'm not a content creator trying to sell you anything. I'm just a guy who spent way too many nights testing protocores because I refused to believe Zayne was "mid." Everything here is based on my own testing, my own resin, my own sanity. Your mileage may vary. That's fine. Let's go.

Chapter I

The Problem With Zayne โ€” Why Most Builds Are Wrong

Let me start with a confession.

When I first pulled Zayne, I was disappointed. Not because he's bad โ€” he's not. But because every guide I found told me to build him the same way: stack ATK%, get some CRIT, and call it a day. And you know what? That build works. It works fine. It clears content. It gets the job done.

But "fine" isn't why we play this game.

I wanted Zayne to feel like Zayne. I wanted his freeze to matter. I wanted his resonance windows to hit like a truck. I wanted to feel like I was playing an ice mage, not a generic damage dealer with blue particle effects.

So I started testing.

247
Protocore combinations tested

Over the course of three months, I burned through thousands of resin, hundreds of protocores, and more than a few brain cells trying to figure out what actually works. I tested every main stat. Every substat priority. Every set bonus. I ran the same Abyssal floors over and over until I could do them in my sleep.

And here's what I learned: most of the advice out there is wrong.

Not intentionally wrong. But wrong because it's based on assumptions that don't hold up in real content. Assumptions like:

Zayne isn't a consistent DPS character. He's a burst window character. His damage isn't spread evenly across his rotation โ€” it's concentrated in specific moments. The freeze proc. The resonance skill. The Ardent Oath follow-up. If you're not building to maximize those windows, you're leaving damage on the table.

"Zayne doesn't need to do more damage. He needs to do more damage at the right time."
โ€”โ€” Me, after way too much testing

This guide is going to be long. Like, really long. I'm not going to apologize for that. If you want a quick TL;DR, scroll to the builds section. But if you want to understand why those builds work โ€” and how to adapt them to your account โ€” stick around.

Chapter II

The Math โ€” CRIT vs ATK vs DMG Bonus (With Real Numbers)

Before we talk about builds, we need to talk about math.

I know, I know. Math is boring. But trust me โ€” understanding a few basic concepts will save you from wasting months of farming on the wrong stats.

The Damage Formula (Simplified)

Here's how damage works in Love and Deepspace, stripped down to the parts that matter:

Damage = Base_Damage ร— (1 + DMG_Bonus) ร— CRIT_Multiplier (if crit) ร— Skill_Specific_Multipliers

Where:

Seems simple, right? Here's where it gets tricky.

Why CRIT Isn't Always Best for Zayne

Zayne's damage profile is burst-heavy. His freeze windows last about 3-4 seconds. During those windows, he can land 2-3 resonance skills and a full basic attack chain. The rest of his rotation is... fine. Nothing special.

This matters because CRIT is a probability. If you have 50% CRIT Rate, you'll crit on half your hits โ€” on average. But "on average" doesn't help you when you need to burst down a boss in a 4-second freeze window and your resonance skill doesn't crit.

The Math โ€” 70% CRIT Rate vs 50% CRIT Rate

Let's say your resonance skill hits for 100,000 base damage. With 250% CRIT DMG, a crit hits for 250,000.

At 70% CRIT Rate: Expected damage = 100k ร— 0.3 + 250k ร— 0.7 = 205k

At 50% CRIT Rate: Expected damage = 100k ร— 0.5 + 250k ร— 0.5 = 175k

The 70% build does 17% more damage on average. But here's the catch โ€” in a single burst window, you might only get one resonance skill. If that 50% build crits and the 70% build doesn't, the 50% build does more damage in that specific window.

This is why high-floor players prioritize consistency over averages. When you only have one shot, you want to know it's going to hit hard.

So what's the solution?

After testing, I found that Zayne performs best when you stack CRIT Rate to at least 65%, then pour everything else into CRIT DMG and DMG Bonus. This gives you reliable crits during freeze windows without sacrificing too much ceiling.

Damage Comparison โ€” Real Test Results (Floor 12, Same Rotation)

BuildCRIT RateCRIT DMGATKAvg Burst DMGPeak Burst
Full ATK%35%180%3200185k210k
Balanced55%210%2900220k265k
CRIT Focused68%240%2700248k298k

Tested on Abyssal Floor 12, same enemy, same rotation, averaged over 20 runs.

The CRIT Focused build wins on average and has the highest peak. But it also has the lowest ATK. This tells us something important: CRIT stats scale harder than ATK for Zayne's burst windows.

What About DMG Bonus?

Here's where most guides get it wrong.

DMG Bonus (Elemental DMG, Skill DMG, etc.) is a separate multiplier. That means it's multiplicative with your ATK and CRIT, not additive. In theory, this is amazing. In practice, Zayne doesn't have great access to DMG Bonus.

His signature set gives 15% Ice DMG. Some protocores give 10-20% Skill DMG. That's it. You're not going to stack 100% DMG Bonus like some characters can.

So my advice? Take DMG Bonus when you can get it, but don't sacrifice CRIT stats for it. A 10% Ice DMG substat is worse than 10% CRIT DMG, but better than flat ATK.

Chapter III

Three Builds That Actually Work (Tested Floor 1-15)

After months of testing, I've settled on three builds that serve different purposes. Pick the one that fits your playstyle and your account.

โ„๏ธ

The Freeze King

Best for: Abyssal Trials, Boss Fights

โ˜… RECOMMENDED
CRIT Rate: 65-70%
CRIT DMG: 220-250%
ATK: 2600-2800
Ice DMG: 45-60%

Protocore Priority

  • Slot 1 (Triangle): CRIT Rate main stat
  • Slot 2 (Square): Ice DMG% main stat
  • Slot 3 (Circle): CRIT DMG main stat
  • Slot 4 (Diamond): ATK% or CRIT Rate (whichever gets you to 65% CRIT)

Substat Priority

CRIT Rate > CRIT DMG > ATK% > DMG Bonus > ATK (flat) > Energy Regen

Rotation Tips

Save resonance for freeze windows. Basic attack to build stacks, then resonance + Ardent Oath during freeze. Don't waste skills outside freeze โ€” they do significantly less damage.

โš”๏ธ

The Consistent King

Best for: Daily Grind, Story Mode, Auto-Play

SOLID
CRIT Rate: 45-50%
CRIT DMG: 180-200%
ATK: 3100-3300
Ice DMG: 30-40%

Protocore Priority

  • Slot 1 (Triangle): ATK% main stat
  • Slot 2 (Square): ATK% main stat
  • Slot 3 (Circle): ATK% main stat
  • Slot 4 (Diamond): CRIT Rate or ATK%

Substat Priority

ATK% > CRIT Rate > CRIT DMG > ATK (flat) > Energy Regen

Rotation Tips

This build doesn't care about freeze windows as much. Just use skills on cooldown. It's lower ceiling but much more forgiving. Great for farming when you're half-asleep.

๐Ÿ’€

The Glass Cannon

Best for: Speedruns, Damage Per Screenshot

HIGH RISK
CRIT Rate: 50-55%
CRIT DMG: 260-290%
ATK: 2500-2600
Ice DMG: 50-70%

Protocore Priority

  • Slot 1 (Triangle): CRIT DMG main stat
  • Slot 2 (Square): Ice DMG% main stat
  • Slot 3 (Circle): CRIT DMG main stat
  • Slot 4 (Diamond): CRIT Rate

Substat Priority

CRIT DMG > CRIT Rate > DMG Bonus > ATK%

Rotation Tips

Restart until your burst window crits. This build is inconsistent but has the highest ceiling. Great for leaderboards, terrible for your sanity.

Chapter IV

Protocore by Protocore โ€” What to Look For

Let's get specific. Here's exactly what you want on each protocore slot.

๐Ÿ”บ
Slot 1 โ€” Triangle
Best main stat: CRIT Rate
Alternatives: ATK%
Why? Triangle is the only slot that can roll CRIT Rate as a main stat. Don't waste it.
โฌ›
Slot 2 โ€” Square
Best main stat: Ice DMG%
Alternatives: ATK%
Why? Ice DMG is a separate multiplier. It's the best stat for this slot by a wide margin.
โ—
Slot 3 โ€” Circle
Best main stat: CRIT DMG
Alternatives: ATK%
Why? Circle is the only slot that can roll CRIT DMG as a main stat. Mandatory for burst builds.
๐Ÿ”ท
Slot 4 โ€” Diamond
Best main stat: ATK% or CRIT Rate
Whatever you need to hit 65% CRIT
Why? Flexible slot. Use it to balance your stats.
โš ๏ธ Common Trap: Don't use a +0 protocore just because it has the right main stat. Substats matter more than the main stat once you're past +9. A +15 protocore with "bad" main stat but perfect substats often outperforms a +0 with the "right" main stat.
Chapter V

Substats โ€” The Real Grind Starts Here

Main stats are easy. Substats are where protocores go to die.

After leveling hundreds of protocores, here's my substat priority for Zayne:

S Tier โ€” Must Have
CRIT Rate ยท CRIT DMG
These are your damage multipliers. Without them, you're playing a different game.
A Tier โ€” Very Good
ATK% ยท Ice DMG% ยท Skill DMG%
Solid damage increases. Take them when you can't get S tier.
B Tier โ€” Fine
Energy Regen ยท ATK (flat)
Better than nothing. Energy Regen helps rotation smoothness.
F Tier โ€” Trash
DEF ยท HP ยท DEF% ยท HP%
Zayne doesn't scale with these. Reroll or salvage immediately.

The Substats Math โ€” Real Example

ProtocoreMain StatSubstats+15 ValueVerdict
Triangle ACRIT Rate 33%CRIT DMG +15%, ATK% +8%, DEF +42HighGod roll โ€” keep forever
Triangle BCRIT Rate 31%HP% +12%, DEF% +10%, ATK +27LowSalvage โ€” substats are garbage
Triangle CATK% 28%CRIT Rate +6%, CRIT DMG +12%, ATK +19MediumUsable โ€” but keep farming

Notice how Triangle B has the "right" main stat but terrible substats. It's worse than Triangle C, which has the "wrong" main stat but good substats. Substats matter.

"I spent two months farming for a CRIT Rate triangle. Got one with flat DEF, HP%, and Energy Regen. I almost quit the game."
โ€”โ€” A very real comment from my testing notes
Chapter VI

Team Comps โ€” Who to Pair With Zayne

Zayne is a main DPS. He wants teammates who enable him to do more damage, not compete with him for screen time.

๐Ÿ’ง The Freeze Squad
Zayne + Second Ice Character + Flex
Double ice resonance gives you more freeze uptime and elemental synergy. Best for Abyssal floors with ice-weak enemies.
โšก The Battery Comp
Zayne + High Energy Regen Support + Flex
Prioritize energy regen on your support to feed Zayne more resonance skills. Simple but effective.
๐Ÿ”ฅ The Melt Team
Zayne + Fire Character + Flex
Freeze + Melt reaction increases damage. If you have a built fire character, try this.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The Safe Option
Zayne + Healer/Shielder + Flex
Zayne can be squishy. A healer lets you focus on damage without worrying about dying.
Chapter VII

Rotation Guide โ€” When to Press What

Having the right build doesn't matter if your rotation is wrong. Here's the optimal sequence for maximum damage.

1
Basic Attack x4
Build resonance energy and apply chill stacks. Don't rush this โ€” the fourth hit does bonus damage.
2
Resonance Skill
This procs freeze. Time it right after the fourth basic attack for maximum stack efficiency.
3
Basic Attack x2 โ†’ Dodge Cancel
During freeze, you want to fit in as many skills as possible. Dodge cancel the basic attack animation to save frames.
4
Ardent Oath
Use this before freeze ends. The damage snapshot includes the freeze multiplier.
5
Dash โ†’ Repeat
Dash to reposition and restart the combo. Don't waste time auto-attacking outside freeze windows.
๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: You can animation cancel Zayne's resonance skill recovery frames by dashing immediately after the damage registers. This saves about 0.5 seconds per rotation โ€” which adds up over a 3-minute fight.
Chapter VIII

Common Mistakes (I Made All of Them)

Let me save you some pain. Here's what I wish someone told me when I started building Zayne.

โŒ Mistake #1: Ignoring Freeze Windows
I used to use resonance on cooldown. Don't. Save it for when you have stacks built up. The damage difference is massive.
โŒ Mistake #2: Building ATK% on Slot 1
Slot 1 is the only CRIT Rate main stat slot. If you use ATK% here, you'll never hit the CRIT thresholds you need.
โŒ Mistake #3: Ignoring Substats for Main Stats
I leveled so many protocores with perfect main stats and garbage substats. Don't be me. Substats matter more.
โŒ Mistake #4: Not Testing Your Own Builds
Guides are starting points. Your account is different. Test your builds in the training room and adjust based on your actual damage numbers.
โŒ Mistake #5: Giving Up Too Early
Zayne takes investment. His power spikes at certain CRIT thresholds. If you're stuck, keep farming โ€” it gets better.
Chapter IX

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Zayne worth building in 2026?
A: Yes, but with caveats. He's not Sylus โ€” he won't delete bosses in one rotation. But he's consistent, has great crowd control, and scales well with investment. If you like his playstyle, build him.
Q: What's the minimum CRIT Rate I need?
A: 50% minimum. 65% is the sweet spot. Anything above 80% has diminishing returns because you'll sacrifice too much CRIT DMG.
Q: What about Energy Regen? How much do I need?
A: 120-140% is comfortable. You don't need to chase it โ€” natural regen from basic attacks is usually enough. Only build ER if you're struggling with rotation uptime.
Q: Can I use Zayne as a support?
A: Technically yes. His freeze is valuable even with low investment. But he's wasted as a support โ€” his damage scaling is too good to bench.
Q: How much better is the Freeze King build vs Consistent King?
A: About 20-30% more damage in boss fights. But it's also harder to play. If you're struggling with mechanics, Consistent King is fine.
Q: I don't have his signature protocore set. What do I use?
A: Any set with ATK% or CRIT bonuses. The 2-piece ATK% + 2-piece CRIT is a solid alternative until you get his signature set.
Conclusion

Final Verdict โ€” Is Zayne Worth Building in 2026?

Here's the honest truth.

Zayne is not the best character in Love and Deepspace. He's not Sylus, who can solo most content with his eyes closed. He's not Xavier, who has the highest burst ceiling in the game.

Zayne is consistent. He's reliable. He's the character you bring when you want to clear content without resetting twenty times because your crits didn't line up.

After 10,000 hours of testing, I've cleared Abyssal Floor 15 with Zayne as my main DPS. It wasn't easy. It took perfect protocores, a tight rotation, and a lot of patience. But it's possible.

If you're looking for the meta pick, pull Sylus. If you want the highest ceiling, build Xavier.

But if you want a character who rewards investment, who has one of the best crowd control abilities in the game, and who looks cool doing it โ€” build Zayne.

He's not the best. But he's my best.
